Spain Won It. Now Rate Everyone Again.

Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final, after extra time, Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute. Their second World Cup and their first since 2010.

The Match Day World Cup pack shipped back in May with all 48 teams rated on form going into the tournament. Those numbers were an educated guess, and they were meant to be. Now the thing has actually been played, so I have gone back and rated everyone again on what they really did.

The pack holds both. Same 48 teams, same fixtures, same bracket, two completely different sets of numbers.

Two sets, two questions

The Projection Set is the original. Rated before a ball was kicked, from form and qualification and squad strength. Who looked strongest in June? Play it forward and let the upsets land where they land.

The Rated Set is new. Rated afterwards, from goals scored, goals conceded and how far each side went. Who actually was strongest? Play it again with the real final table sat next to you as the thing to beat.

Neither one is a correction of the other, and nothing has been overwritten. They live in separate downloads with their own apps that save independently, so you can have a tournament running in each at once.

Some teams barely moved. Others are close to unrecognisable, including one side who went in rated as an attacking team and came out with an elite defence and almost no attack. The full method is written up inside the pack, along with every judgment call I made and the numbers from testing it, so you can argue with it or adjust it yourself.

The cards now have the real scorers

This is the part I enjoyed most. All 48 team cards carry that squad's actual goalscorers, and the slots are shared out so a name comes up about as often as he really scored. Roll a d10 and read the card.

Oyarzabal took 38 per cent of Spain's goals and holds 40 per cent of Spain's card. Messi took 44 per cent of Argentina's and holds 42 per cent. Every one of the 178 players who scored at this World Cup is on a card somewhere.

A few cards look lopsided, and that is the tournament rather than a mistake. One card is built entirely from squad names, because that team did not score at all. If they score in your tournament they have already beaten history.

And a benchmark to play against

There are no individual scorelines in the pack, which is deliberate. Your group stage produces your own qualifiers, so your bracket will not be the real bracket and a pre-filled one would just contradict you.
